Engineering Tractor Pro: Offline Billing & Operator Field Logs in Kotlin
In rural Gujarat, tractor owners and custom hire operators face a persistent business issue: tracking rotavater, cultivator, and seeder attachment sessions for dozens of local farms without carrying paper notebooks that get ruined by mud, grease, and rain.
To address this operational challenge, I engineered Tractor Pro (published on Google Play under com.tractorpro) — a robust, offline-first transaction and fleet ledger engine tailored for heavy equipment and custom machinery operators.
1. Technical Requirements & Challenges
- Zero Network Field Operation: Full feature availability without active cellular signal.
- Instant Calculation Engine: Dynamic calculation based on hours worked, custom implement rates, or acreage units.
- Credit & Payment Tracking: Tracking paid vs unpaid accounts with automated notification alerts.
2. Architecture & Tech Stack
Tractor Pro is written natively in Kotlin using Jetpack Compose for reactive declarative UI components. Data persistence uses Room SQLite for local caching alongside Firebase Firestore for automatic background synchronization when internet connectivity becomes available.
